It is an experience we all face, but rarely do we think about how bereavement impacts our professional lives. Work can be a very useful place to be when you are ready following a bereavement, but it can also be an unnecessarily difficult environment if things aren’t managed well. Often, that’s not deliberate - but is instead a symptom of a lack of awareness, especially when it comes to managers.

- Different types of loss: can you differentiate between non-death loss, bereavement loss and ambiguous loss? The death of a family member or pet is different from loss of property, or loss of chance, for example. And sometimes a loved one is lost psychologically through dementia, but not physically. Learn how to recognise all types of loss.
- Dimensions of grief: can you recognise the psychological consequences of grief, the physical ones and the social ones, and how they are interconnected? Understanding that grief is multifaceted and highly individualised is crucial for creating supportive environments.
- Bereavement Leave 101 - Key FAQs: This is a vital but highly complex area of Employment law that managers need to know – for example:
- how much leave can be taken, and by whom, under what circumstances?
- what should a mother who has suffered a miscarriage be offered?
- what if an employee is on adoption leave when their child dies?
- how does the situation differ if a child dies over the age of 18?
- how should a return to work be managed?
