Workshop Objective

The only Institute for Leadership & Management (ILM) course of its kind, this programme has been designed for senior managers and leaders in primary care seeking to further develop their management and leadership capabilities, who recognise the need to satisfy various stakeholders and want to invest in their own personal brand.

This course will prepare the health management professionals of the future for the period of unprecedented change that is taking place in primary care. It prepares them to lead innovation and change, understand the importance of partnership working, better manage practice finance and delegate more effectively. Through more effective management, they will be able to free up their head space so they can continue leading and innovating for the future NHS.

Workshop Agenda

Module 1: Leading Innovation and Change

The aim of this module is to understand the importance of innovation and change within general practice, enable participants to propose innovative solutions to improve organisational performance and develop the skills that will enable participants to lead and manage change within an organisation.

Day 1

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of this workshops are;

  • Induction to ILM5
  • Explain the importance of innovation within general practice and specifically own organisation
  • Explore the link between innovation and organisational performance as well as the financial and social benefits of innovation.
  • Examine approaches to innovation including radical and incremental.
  • Understand the importance of effective change management when implementing new innovations.
  • Examine continuous improvement techniques and the difference between kaizen and business process re-engineering.
  • Examine the conditions and processes required to encourage creativity and innovation.

Day 2

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of this workshops are;

  • Explain the ways innovation solutions can be assessed.
  • Understand the methods of environmental scanning e.g. SWOT and PESTLE
  • Understand the nature and role of the ‘vision change’ process.
  • Examine approaches to critical decision-making, methods of determining feasibility and viability of options.
  • Explore the importance of decision-making techniques including quantitative and qualitative information.
  • Understand human and financial factors during change.
  • Examine techniques for monitoring and evaluating change, including risk.

Day 3

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of this workshops are;

  • Understand the importance of developing a change management plan.
  • Stakeholder mapping and management including ways to overcome resistance.
  • Examine the skills and competencies required to effectively manage innovation and change.
  • Explore the principles and practice associated with managing creativity and innovation
  • Understand the impact on other people departments and organisation when introducing innovation and change.
  • Explore ways to organise and coordinate resources and activities to achieve the plan change, including the use of Gantt charts and network planning tools change.

Module 2: Partnership Working

The aim of this module is to develop understanding and the ability to work effectively with partner organisations to achieve the common goal

By the end of this workshop, delegates will understand the principles of partnership working and how to meet the needs and expectations of partners.

Day 4

The learning outcome of this workshops are;

  • Explore the differences of strategic and operational partnerships.
  • Understand the principles for establishing effective partnership working.
  • Analyse prospective partner interest and expectation.
  • Assessing the short and long-term benefits of effective partnership working in the workplace.

Module 3: Partnership Working & Delegation

The aim of this workshop for this module is to develop understanding and the ability to work effectively with partner organisations to achieve the common goal. The other aim is to enable experienced managers to develop their delegation skills so that they can delegate effectively in the work place and empower others.

By the end of this half day workshop, delegates will understand how to reach a partnership working agreement and have evaluated, monitored, reviewed processes, procedure and delegates will understand the benefits of delegation.

Day 5

Module 4: Becoming an Effective Leader

The aim of this module is to enable participants to understand their own ability to fulfill the key responsibilities of a leadership role and to be able to evaluate their own ability to lead others.

  • Examine how to evaluate the appropriateness of different leadership styles in the context of own responsibilities

  • Examine the context of emotional leadership and how it applies to a leadership role

Day 7

  • Understand the importance of examining own leadership strengths and limitations
  • Undertake an assessment of current leadership style and examine development needs
  • Explore and identify opportunities to develop delegate’s leadership role
  • Examine the characteristics of self-leadership, including;

    • Dealing with setbacks
  • Exploring effective communication and its importance in conveying vision & goals and engaging others.
  • Examine the role of leaders in terms of motivation and commitment of others, including critiquing the main theories (e.g. Maslow, Hertzberg and MacGregor)

Module 5: Understanding Financial Management

The aim of this module is to develop an understanding of Finance within the organisational context, understand the value of recording financial information and understand budgets and how to manage budgets within own area of operation.

Day 8

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of this workshops are;

  • Examine the importance of financial information in terms of management and decision-making.
  • Understand the principles of financial management accounting.
  • Explore the organisations key sources of finance and/or funding.
  • Understand the range of financial stakeholders and their expectations of the organisation e.g. CCG’s, the local authority, local NHS providers.
  • Understand the importance of cash flow forecasting and cash flow management and credit control within the organisation.
  • Examine a range of financial performance measures and how to assess their effectiveness within organisation.
  • Explore the value of recording financial information including the role of financial performance indicators.
  • Examine and understand the purposes of the main financial documents used within the organisation e.g. balance sheet profit and loss account.

Day 9

Learning Outcomes

The learning outcome of this workshops are;

  • Explain the process of budget setting within general practice and the wider NHS including financial and non-financial budgets
  • Explore methods of preparing budgets and zero-based budgets
  • Explore a range of budgetary techniques used within general practice and examine how to use them to control costs
  • Understand how variances are calculated and used to analyse budgetary deviation.
